Super-Mom Syndrome

Super Mom Syndrome | Capture the Little Things blog

I realize that not all of my readers are mothers of young children, but let me take a moment to encourage those of you who are mothers...

Due to increased popularity of Pinterest and Instagram, there seems to be a common problem in society today where mothers compare themselves to each other. They continually strive for that impossibly perfect Pinterest and Instagram mom image. I like to call this the Super-Mom Syndrome.

I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not Super-Mom!

But don’t tell my kids - they don’t know any better.

They don’t know that they’re supposed to be getting carefully planned organic sandwiches on homemade multigrain bread instead of a PBJ at the last minute.

They don’t know they’re missing out on creating beautiful works of art during craft times in a perfectly clean family room every afternoon instead of helping with household chores.

And please don’t tell them about the many ways I should be entertaining them instead of making them come up with their own fun!

No, I’m definitely not the perfect Supermom! And you don't have to be either!

But our kids live amazing lives and are very blessed!

It’s not about creating the “perfect childhood” for our children. Your children don’t care if your life or theirs is “Pinterest-perfect”.

It’s about the every day little things that we are training and teaching them. Love. Joy. Patience. Kindness. Forgiveness. Selflessness.

If you’re able to make beautiful organic meals 3 times a day, whip together a killer afternoon craft, and keep them from getting bored for the entire day, then good for you! You're amazing!

But if you do it at the expense of your joy, at the expense of your kids’ joy, or even at the expense of your sanity... I beg you to ask yourself, “Is it really worth it?”

Is being a Pinterest-perfect Super-Mom worth the stress and craziness that can practically cause you to lose your mind?

No. It absolutely is not.

It’s not about creating the “perfect childhood” for our children. It’s about the every day little things that we are training and teaching them.

Dear hardworking mom, don't beat yourself up for not being the "perfect mom". Yes, do the best that you are able to do! Just make sure you're still maintaining an atmosphere of love and joy. Get back to focusing on the little things in life that truly matter!

And you want to know a secret? Supermom doesn’t really exist! She’s just as fictitious as any other superhero.

Don't get caught up in Super-Mom Syndrome. Just take a deep breath, smile, and just be the mom your kids need!!
